Empty Throne Ramp

Sigil of the Empty Throne - Magic: The GatheringEver since Sigil of the Empty Throne had been spoiled, I have had a pretty decent crush on it. How come? It's not the most versatile by any means. In order for the card to work, you basically have to build a deck around it. This was a challenge that I was most eager to try (and it's a color outside of red, which I inevitably seem to wind up in).

Most other decks I've seen around forums consisted of white/blue decks, primarily because of Shimmering Wing's synergy  with Sigil of the Empty Throne. 2-cost angels are great, but I'm still not 100% positive about dedicating 2-4 slots in a deck to an enchantment that gives your flying creatures "more flying". I completely understand the concept of the Wing's second ability, but it doesn't feel quite cost effective still.

While we are in the world of tri-color right now, I chose to look to the left of white. Hello, Green! Green and I go way back. I like green because of it's ability to get stuff out fast and big. By adding green, this allows for a very quick, competitive lockdown of the opponent's setup. Before I get to far, please take a look at my deck:

Empty Throne Ramp (60 cards)

Creatures
1x Battlegrace Angel
3x Knight of the White Orchid

Enchantments
4x Oblivion Ring
4x Sigil of the Empty Throne
1x Story Circle
4x Fertile Ground
3x Overgrowth
2x Weight of Conscience
4x Lignify
 Spells
3x Path to Exile
1x Dawnglow Infusion
3x Idyllic Tutor
4x Martial Coup

Land
6x Forest
14x Plains
2x Seaside Citadel
1x Mistveil Plains
Sideboard
2x Bant Charm
2x Hindering Light
1x Endless Horizons
1x Mark of Asylum
2x Recumbent Bliss
2x Celestial Purge
2x Filigree Fracture
2x Negate
1x Idyllic Tutor

Allow me to explain how the deck operates. First, lay lands and ramp enchants such as Fertile Ground and Overgrowth. In the meantime, lock down your opponent's board by taking advantage of the O-rings and Lignify. I chose Lignify over Weight of Conscience for two reasons. First, it takes the abilities away (important!!), secondly, Martial Coup cleans up 0/4 blockers nicely. By turn four or five you will likely be able to throw down an Empty Throne or a 5-soldier Martial Coup. Just keep on locking down until your angels and/or soldiers take your opponent over.

Testing at FNM

How did it perform? I played Empty Throne Ramp at last week's FNM against five different decks. I initially tied for first, but I had a 2-1 game against me, putting me in a close second!

Cryptic CommandMerfolk Control - This was my first match for the night. Opponent opened up with a couple Stonybrook Bannerets and a Wake Thrasher. I started with a hand full of green spells but no forest in sight. My opponent, in turn, kept beating me in the face with the Wake Thrasher. Game two, I sideboarded in a bit more creature hate, to find that my opponent's hand for game two was not so many creatures as it was a bunch of counter spell. By the end, he had played two Cryptic Commands and three Sage's Dousing. Doh! 0-2

White Lockdown - I found it rather funny to see that I was playing against a white lockdown deck that revolved more around the use of Cho-Manno, Revolutionary and Pariah, as well as other game-stalling cards. His win condition was also, from what I understood, Sigil of the Empty Throne and/or Divinity of Pride. At one point, I was down to 4 life and two Empty Thrones on the table before he ran out of steam. I then took advantage of a moment when he was tapped out to restore my life to 24 using Dawnglow Infusion. A turn later, I drew an O-Ring, got two Angels on the table and ended with that. Second game went very quick. He got mana screwed and I had pumped out 5 angels before game end. 2-0

Demigod of RevengeMono Red - This one was pretty interesting. First game, He pounded me with two Boggart Ram Gangs quite severely before I could PtE or Lignify them. He then pulled a Demigod of Revenge, which I PtE'd before he could get any damage in. Couple burn spells later and I was toast. The second and third games, I sideboarded in two Celestial Purge as well as a couple negates to counter some red hate (also to negate any possible enchantment breakers). Both rounds I was able to get Story Circle out, which really ended the game in itself. Both rounds, I was able to pull off a couple 7+ Martial Coups, which finished the games in my favor. 2-1

Naya - Game one was a bit of of a bind. My opening hand had an Empty Throne, but no lock-down. Just Overgrowth and Fertile Ground. For the first four turns, I was beat in the face by a couple Knotvine Mystics and a Bull Cerodon. However, in the meantime, I had drawn two obilvion rings and a PtE. In one turn, I was able to PtE the Ceredon and O-Ring both Mystics. This resulted in two angels for me. Tables turned in my favor after this. Game two was a bit quicker. Similar start for Naya, but this time I was able to take care of everything using a couple Martial Coup. 2-0

Bant Aggro - Both games were very quick. My hand for the first game had an Overgrowth, PtE, O-Ring and Empty Throne. I took care of his initial threats and then went for the kill with the angels. Game two, I started with two Martial Coups and two Overgrowths in hand. My next draw was yet another Martial Coup! Turn four, I Overgrowthed twice. Turn five, he was tapped out, so I laid a 9 Cost Martial Coup! BAM! Seven Soldiers ready to go. Attacked the next turn, Martial Couped again for 8 new, untapped soldiers and won with those. 2-0

I was very satisfied with the build overall, but from the tournament alone, I'd say it could use a bit more anti-blue and counter spell. I have since then main decked Bant Charm and Hindering Light. A couple other cards in my sideboard that proved to be very useful were Negate and Celestial Purge. Naya and Mono Red were not pleased with Celestial Purge. :-) You can view the most recent build at MTGVault.com.

Very nice. I'm impressed with your build that has a lot of synergy and tempo. Right on.

That is a really cool deck. Would be a little mana heavy, but it would be fun with Enchanted evening :)

Hinduf, Thanks! Enchanted Evening would be awesome, unfortunately however, the timing between that and Empty Throne don't quite work out. :-(

very similiar to the list i run however i go creatureless, and use more recumbant bliss/o-ring/pacifism to help with board control. the enchantments late game get me extra angels and recumbant bliss pulls double duty, stopping an attacker and minor life gain. good list.
